Article 9 (2) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa calls for the active participation of women in governance and decision-making at all levels. The Protocol further underscores the importance of integrating a gender perspective in all government policies, laws and development plans [Article 2 (1)] within Africa. In the same measure, the United Nations Security Council under Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security acknowledges the disproportionate and unique impact of armed conflict on women and girls and calls for the adoption of a gender perspective when considering the special needs of women and girls during conflict, reparations, resettlement, rehabilitation, reintegration and post conflict reconstruction. As such, DESOC Consultancy takes into account the vital role of women in conflict prevention, peace-building and post-conflict reconstruction through analyzing strategies to overcome barriers to women’s meaningful participation in peace processes across Africa.
